Spiral wound gaskets are precision-engineered to provide a highly resilient and reliable seal, even under extreme pressure and temperature fluctuations. They are constructed by spirally winding a V-shaped metal strip with a filler material (such as flexible graphite or PTFE). This unique “spring-like” design allows the gasket to recover from the compression and thermal cycling inherent in industrial boiler environments, ensuring a tight, long-lasting seal that maintains integrity where conventional flat gaskets might fail or blow out.

Spiral wound gaskets should be replaced whenever a flange or boiler access point is disassembled, as they are designed for single-use to ensure a proper seal. Even if the gasket appears visually intact after removal, the metal windings have been permanently deformed to create the seal, and reusing them significantly increases the risk of leaks and pressure loss. Additionally, if you notice evidence of gasket compression failure, corrosion on the metal windings, or if your boiler is undergoing a scheduled maintenance turnaround, it is critical to install a fresh gasket to maintain maximum safety and operating efficiency.
